Land Your Next Remote Job - With Michelle Coulson
So you’ve decided that the 9-5 office grind isn’t for you.
You crave more freedom, more flexibility and more adventure.
GREAT! You’re already one step closer simply by making that decision.
Now how do you make it a reality??
If you don’t have a job that allows you to work wherever you want, getting a remote job is your next step!
But getting started can seem overwhelming.
One of our wonderful partners, Michelle, the founder and CEO of Remote Rebellion knows all too well the struggles of getting a remote job.
How Michelle Is Embracing Her Remote Life and How She Is Helping Others Do The Same
Before she set up Remote Rebellion, she worked as a recruiter for 7 years. She seized the opportunity of the pandemic to go and work from Bali whilst the London office was closed. Then in 2021 when her boss called to say that the office was opening and she needed to come back. She felt sick. Go back to her tiny flat, in the cold, back to commuting on the tube every day to sit in an office for 8 hours?? No thanks.
So she quit, thinking it would be easy enough to get another job. But getting a remote job was a whole different story. There were far fewer opportunities out there that allowed her to work from Bali.
After a few weeks, she changed her whole strategy and landed 2 freelance jobs doing recruitment for remote first companies.
That’s when she realised that instead of helping companies to hire, she could use the things she’d learnt, resources she’d created and remote network she’d built to teach others- just like you to get a remote job.
Michelle's 5 Top Tips for Landing a Remote Job...
1. Fix your mindset
If you think that your lack of a degree or experience is holding you back, it isn’t- it’s your mindset. There are entry-level jobs out there and a lot do not require you to have a degree. Rather than focusing on what you don’t have, focus on the things you do have- what makes you unique? What can you offer a remote-first company?
2. Define the type of job you want to do remotely
The first step to finding a remote job is knowing what you want. If you’re just starting, this can be hard. Maybe you’ve never worked remotely, or maybe you’ve worked from home before but not with a remote-first company. Maybe you’re looking for something that gives you more flexibility or more time at home than your current job.
Whatever your situation, make sure you start by defining what type of remote job is perfect for your lifestyle and needs.
3. Be more visible online
You don’t need to be a social media influencer to get a remote job, but it really helps to have a consistent presence on social media. Make sure your accounts are updated with recent photos and content.
That means, for example, updating and cleaning up your LinkedIn profile, adding followers, joining groups, and posting often.
4. Apply for remote jobs!
Once you have completed the steps above, it’s now time to reach out to remote-first companies and recruiters! Make sure that your CV and cover letter are up-to-date and that they demonstrate exactly what the company is looking for.
Send off a few applications and be patient! It can take time for companies to review your CV, so don’t worry if it takes longer than expected.
